Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 Windows Mobile phone

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. There isn’t a big difference between the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 and X1, so you get the same solid and chunky feel. The screen which is flush with the chassis, however, is visibly larger at 3.2 inches. The left and right softkeys have been removed on the X2 and, as a result the control panel is less cluttered. In the centre is the touch-sensitive navigation key. Around the back, the design is now more gentle and, in a way slightly more pleasing to the eye. We like the rounded edges, but the most significant difference here is the 8.1-megapixel camera instead of a 3.2-megapixel one on the X1. (HTC Touch Pro 2)

The 3.5mm audio jack on the X1 is at the top and this is the same with the X2. However, the X2 now uses a micro-USB port instead of mini-USB for charging and connecting to the PC. Like the X1, the X2 also has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The buttons are now larger and provide a slightly better tactile experience than on the X1. The spacebar has also shrunk to make way for the directional keys on the right.

The 3-by-3 panel concept that debuted on the X1 has also made it to the X2. According to Sony Ericsson, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 will be preloaded with 14 panels and users have the option to download an additional 16 from PlayNow Arena. Some of these include Skype, Mytopia, Google, CNN and Windows Live. Going by the screenshots, it is possible to take a picture or upload an existing image directly from the Facebook panel on the device. Double-clicking the new SlideView button activates the grid and you can flip through all the panels on the handset. There’s also a new feature that lets you set which panels to appear at selected times of the day.

Other enhancements to the interface include SlideView and a 3D Signature panel. In a nutshell, SlideView lets you have quick access to your contacts, messages and multimedia content, etc. It also gives you an overview of missed calls, emails and text messages. Building on the same shortcut concept is the 3D Signature panel that comprises 3D boxes of different sizes and has a ripple-like effect when activated.

The Xperia Service that was offered to X1 users is also available with the X2. This is an aftersales service that provides technical support from troubleshooting problems to assisting users with using the device. The company also said it will replace the handset (within the first 12 months of the warranty period) when it stops working while the user is overseas.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 runs on the Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional operating system and, along with it, Outlook Mobile, Office Mobile with OneNote and support for Microsoft Exchange services. The 3.2-inch WVGA touchscreen is a resistive-type display which requires slight pressure to detect key presses. The stylus is stowed away in a compartment slot on the device. Aside from that, the X2 also supports HSPA 7.2Mbps/2Mbps download/upload speeds, as well as TV-out. Of the 512MB ROM, about 110MB is available to the user.

Sony Ericsson hasn’t announced a price for the Xperia X2 yet, but the device is expected to be available early Q4 in Asia Pacific. We can only hope that this happens on October 6 when Windows Mobile 6.5 debut at the same time.
